My Shack!

Currently (as of 8/11/2026) I run:

• Icom IC-735

• Kenwood TS-711A

• Kenwood TS-811A

• Kenwood TM-D700A

• Yaesu FT-470

• Yaesu FT-818ND

I USED to run a TS-430s. However after many years of use, age, and FT8 at 100% power (whoops), it has finally died. I now run an Icom IC-735 limited to 30 watts max. Primarily this is an FT8 machine, however I do search for SSB operators from time to time. With my noise levels it's a real challenge to get anything above 3-5. This rig is still run with the AT-250 and PS-430 acessories from the Kenwood.

For VHF & UHF I run a matching pair of somewhat busted 711A & 811A. Both have the same solenoid issue where it won't engage/disengage properly anymore. But for repeaters this is fine. The 711A is also missing half of it's front panel functionality.

For antennas I have a G5RV JR on top of my house spanning the entire roof, laying flat. It picks up a fair amount of noise but works very well as a transmit antenna. This antenna is also only about 25ft above ground. For 2m & 70cm I use a KB9VBR J-Pole set, fed with DXE-400. It works well, hits most local repeaters.

In the mobile (07 Pathfinder): I run a D700A into a FireStik 2 meter 5/8 wave. Works well with a K400 mount on the rear hatch. Sticks out above the roof high enough that I can hit near Anacortes! I also run CB and GMRS for when I'm in the mountains.

Finally, for Portable: A combo of the 818ND and Buddistick Pro with the extra long whip. I also use a FT-470 in the pack at all times.
